Notes Frankston – Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula
The area around Frankston was inhabited by the Kulin Aboriginal people for thousands of years. The first European settlement in the district began in the mid 1800s and was primarily based around agricultural and fishing. The town of Frankston was born in April 1854, and steadily grew as a result of the railway line connecting it to Melbourne, and as a large service town for smaller settlements on the Mornington Peninsula.
Frankston’s most famous landmark is its foreshore which lines Port Phillip Bay. It has excellent beaches and an attractive waterfront that includes the 500m long Frankston Pier and Frankston Foreshore. The foreshore is bordered by a raised boardwalk which stretches over 12 kilometres to Seaford. There are playgrounds and parks, all with sweeping views over the bay.
Frankston is home to a number of nature reserves and parks that feature walking trails and picnic spots including the George Petland Botanical Gardens, Bunurong Park, Casurina Reserve and Sweetwater Creek Nature Reserve. Frankston’s other attractions include heritage buildings, art galleries and theatres. Frankston is also an ideal base from which to explore the nearby Mornington Peninsula.
Over 150 years, Frankston has grown and developed into an outstanding regional capital on the bay. New residents, businesses and investors are increasingly drawn to the enviable quality of life, strategic location and outstanding opportunities offered by this thriving “regional capital on the bay”.
