Job Seeker : On Assignment, at work
Being a temp can initially be demanding. The following tips are provided to assist you to quickly settle into a new environment and to make your work both enjoyable and rewarding.

Sometimes you may be over skilled for the role to which you have been assigned. In such cases remember that the client wants the best person possible to get the job done or to compensate for their own staff being absent. Make the most of it and do a great job!

You will find the following tips will assist you in making a success of your temp assignments:

  • Soon after you arrive at your assignment call your Australian Recruiting Group consultant and advise us of your daytime contact number. It is preferable for you to have your own mobile phone. Keep it turned off at work and check for messages during breaks.
  • Leave a great impression. Every assignment is a potential new reference for you and may lead to more work or a permanent job offer!
  • Remember your time sheet. If you don't have a time sheet, let us know so we can get some to you. A new time sheet will be sent to you with each pay advice.
  • Be on time. In fact, try to be a little early on the first day of a new assignment.
  • Introduce yourself to co-workers. When you meet new people, a warm, professional attitude is the best way to fit in.
  • Dress appropriately for each assignment. Your Australian Recruiting Group consultant will let you know what to expect.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you have any queries concerning the tasks you are given or the company's facilities, don't hesitate to ask the client. If, however, you have queries or problems with the assignment as a whole, call Australian Recruiting.
  • Be flexible. Do your best to adapt to the environment and procedures of each workplace. This may encourage the client to request you specifically for future assignments.
  • Clarify policy. Ask the client when it is convenient to take your lunch break. Do not assume. Also check the length of your lunch break.
  • Always get permission before working overtime.
  • Be alert to opportunities. If you have spare time, approach your supervisor and seek more work or offer to help others where it might be useful. Ask if another department needs assistance.
  • Keep our clients' work confidential. Don't discuss the details of your work with anyone but the client's supervisor. After a short time on the job you may also become aware of gossip. Stay out of it, stay neutral and avoid expressing opinions.
  • Show your appreciation for the time other employees spend helping you. They are taking time from their own work to spend time with you. Be courteous and attentive.
  • Limit personal calls while on assignment. Phone calls of a personal nature should be kept brief and infrequent and strictly only during a break. Before using the client's telephone for personal calls, check with your supervisor for the correct policy.
  • Keep up with the latest technology. Never turn down the opportunity to learn something new. It will add to your experience and your job satisfaction. Keep a record of the new skills you are acquiring and be sure to let Australian Recruiting Group know so that we can keep your file up-to-date.
